i don't know that i have much life experience to contribute much being that i'm not even 30 yet, and i think asking what motivates people to divide up into couples and families is an important set of questions, but one so overdetermined by complex factors that it's hard to consider. i have spent the last two years at a job away from my "partner" for reasons that are not just reducible to income, though that is certainly a big part of it. but there's also the desire to do work that i feel is important (teaching in this case) and having the time to do other work that i think is important (art, writing, etc...) - "cultural capital" i guess. i'm not sure it's the right decision - but there's also the decision on the other end (my partner's).
in the end, i'm not sure what is a more conservative move: breaking an intimate relationship over personal desires to be "important" and have a steady job; or making a decision based on notions of "family."
but i can say the desire to be part of a self regulated" unit is comforting... i don't know the value of "importance" outside of defined relationships.
anyway, this topic kind of "hits home" for me so i though i'd respond even if i didn't actually have much to add.
