Since Günther Selichar is one of the few artists who can invariably convince me to change my mind, every time I start insisting again that I don't like pictures, I just posted an announcement about his current project to EA Dobbs. I have only been to New York once in my life - about two months ago for three days - but having seen Times Square, now I am trying to imagine what this project could look like there. With all the lights and moving images and movement everywhere, how can you tell that this is art? Is art still art if it is indistinguishable from its surroundings?

I know this question sounds very silly or trivial, but I have recently ended up entangled in a number of very different discussions about what people understand as "art" for very different reasons and why it matters to them, so I am asking again anyway, knowing full well that the question can't really be answered. I would be very curious to hear from anyone who has a chance to see this project in New York, what their impressions are.
For me, Günther Selichar's work has a very powerful effect in a gallery space, but how can this kind of work assert itself in New York space? Or is that even the point? |
