i agree that there should also be room for the lecture format where appropriate. but i think there are project presentations whose complexity warrants it. moreover i find that theory and projects aren't mutually exclusive. on the other hand, there are times when i think theoretical discussion could benefit from an open format - i.e. a back and forth with the audience on ideas, rather than one-way.
