[- Design for Humanitarian Causes
By SophiaRawlinson, Section whatever...

I recently came across Design For The World - an organisation that partners organisations in need and voluntary designers (graphic designers, industrial designers and interior and architectural designers) in order to provide voluntary design for those in need. Another organisation, Interconnection - specialises purely in voluntary web design for humanitarian causes who may require such a service.

Let's think about hospitality. With the world wide web there is a platform created on which this old cultural practise and tradition of hospitality could take place in a new way. But how is hospitality applied and developed in the internet, a medium, in which equal exchange far away from hierarchical structures was seen as an idealistic goal? What happens with the special rules in hospitable relations and hospitable laws, f.e. concerning immigration within the practice of online hospitality? What role do you think play special types of hospitable partners, generous or selfish hosts, parasitical and scrounging guests?

[- Google and American Torture of Iraqi Prisoners

Why is it when you do a google search using the phrase "iraq prisoners tortured by americans" in a web search you get 31,200 hits but when you do an image search employing the same phrase you get "Your search - iraq prisoners tortured by americans - did not match any documents", yet most of the web document hits have as a part of their respective web pages the images of Americans soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners. Things that make you go "Hummmmmmmm!"

As a Media Maker I find it disturbing that the Walt Disney corporation is practicing censorship (again) by ordering Miramax films to block the release of Michael Moore's new documentary on the Bush Adminstration and its response to 9/11.

One of the intellectual property battlefields - scientific publishing has been undergoing deep changes for some time. The polarity of views is visible as anywhere else, where op-and-pro-ponents of IP shout out lound and bark at each other. And again, someone appears who wants to introduce peace.

Leider ist es jetzt schon etwas aus dem Zeitrahmen gefallen, aber ich bin "on a tight schedule" - vor allem in letzter Zeit viel am programmieren, aber hier ist mein Bericht zu unserm Projekt (als E.A. Dobbs- Eintrag)

Hello Discordia Community,
I wanted to share a recent project, The Public Broadcast Cart that was part of WiFi event in Lower Manhattan at City Hall Park.

[editor's note, by Aileen] Since Ryan Griffis refers to this project in his essay posted yesterday to EA Dobbs, I have moved this back to the front page to invite more discussion.

[- Social Software & Senior Citizens

Continuing the 'Social Software & Senior Citizens' guest host discussion.

I think Matthew Fuller's ideas for social software seem to focus more on software that is critical of itself and software development issues, but may not necessarily be more 'user-friendly' - much like the work of Sarai and The Waag. In my project, I aimed to work towards more 'user-friendly' interfaces for senior citizens, along the lines of work by Sarai and the Waag; although it certainly would have been interesting to develop some sort of conceptual work based on Fuller's definitions of social software in his essay.
