I think you are right about filtering differently, Amy. When I am reading something, my filter works more along the lines of "Yes, yes, yes ... there's a point that seems to need further consideration ..." If I find that there are more and more "points in need of further consideration", then I think I want to read a different author, find another opinion, a more satisfyingly coherent perspective altogether.

Now I am wondering, though, how this relates to the question of which authors are quoted more frequently in certain contexts. Which kinds of reading filters have a stronger influence in determining which authors become "authoritative"?
