i meet and or speak to people on a daily basis who either believe hoaxes like this, or don't have the tools to distinguish real from fake. consequently, the spend a lot of time and mental energy worrying about something that isn't necessarily true, while the real injustices are taking place right under their noses (and so these kinds of hoaxes end up being almost diversionary).

so while the general issue of privacy invasion is an important one to discuss, it is also important to know which stories are true and which stories are false, so that you can better determine where to spend your energy. i.e., if you are really active in fighting all the latest privacy invading projects/legal measures and so on, i don't think you want to spend your time chasing down and protesting a red herring. my personal philosophy is that truth, or better yet, having the knowledge and tools to distinguish truth from fiction to the best of your ability, should be the guiding principle when dealing with these issues, especially in times such as these when our culture is being fed a gluttonous government regulated diet of propaganda.
