What is the difference between igniting a discussion and posting an essay or announcement? | 3 comments

I think I didn't express that very well, but one obvious reason for distinguishing between two different ways of posting is that E.A. Dobbs is a database for announcements, first of all. As Amy said, of course we hope that discussions will spill over from E.A. Dobbs into the other sections. All the sections (with the possible exception of Discordia Home Improvements) are not based on content, but rather on different ways of dealing with information. Ideally then, someone could post an announcement to E.A. Dobbs about a media conference, for example, which someone could ignite a discussion about in the question corner by raising questions about the conference topic or why certain speakers were invited and not others, etc. Someone else could "filter" this conference through their knowledge of relevant topics that were not addressed or could have been approached differently. Someone else might write a review that could lead to discussions in a different direction.

The same principle could apply to essays, especially since discussions that are sparked by essays usually seem to start from a specific point, rather than the essay as a whole. This is the idea - could it work?

yeah, that's a problem. our hope is that sometimes people would post an essay to eadobbs and then start a discussion linking to their essay and inviting discussion some aspect(s) of it. but that's not easily communicated... and anyway, it's true that there is no (and i think should be no) definitive line between where one type of post starts and the other ends, just general guidelines...
