i would agree with you about americans and mortality, except that, like most things, generalizing about americans doesn't really pan out. not all americans suddenly seemed to realize their own mortality. for example, many of the large number of americans living in violent neighborhoods were really irked by the sudden attention to vulnerability and danger 9/11 brought, as they routinely dodge bullets in their neighborhoods, same as they did before. they just don't quite get as much coverage on CNN...

personally, i didn't quite get the sudden shock aspect of "terrorism at home" either, especially given that the same people had bombed the same building 8 years earlier.

as to your other point about "kidultism" as a reaction against corporations. i don't believe that it is, nor did i say that. i said that the article and cited sociologists seem to bemoan it for reasons that seem essentially corporate profit-motivated. why not just leave it alone? as to whether kidultism itself is essentially selling things - it's a good question, except that the article - and the cited sociologists - seem to blame kidultism for failing to sell more expensive things. so we replace expensive purchases with cheaper ones? maybe that results in more profit margin so it's a korporate konspiracy after all - maybe not. or, in my case, i just go to the beach, which is essentially free (ja, the suntan lotion people make some bucks off me though!)
