it's good to point out the email hoax, but on the other hand, this is one of those things that's so close to the truth, that pointing out it's a hoax almost seems misleading.

the part about the airlines appears to be well documented... in related news, i noticed the other day that british airways automated message when they answer the phone now starts out by telling you that they can give all your information to customs officials from whatever countries you might touch...i guess that's not surprising, but despite the email hoax, there's so much real privacy invasion being legalized - and it's in general completely opaque and oblique - that i think what's really happening and what's a myth is a good point to discuss.
