[new] What abous us? (Avg. Score: none / Raters: 0) (#6)

Yesterday I watched the The Weather Underground at Filmforum in Manhattan. Go and see it but close ears and eyes once Todd Gitlin appears if you liked his book THE SIXTIES.

One question was raised by one young vivid hipster woman of the "Weather Underground" at the time of the Vietnam War: Don't we as citizens share some of the responsibility for the violent acts that our government launches in the world? Their answer was clear: violent acts should be met with militancy. ("Piece now!")

I don't share this attitude in today's situation- but time and again we see wars passing us by on TV and computer screens: are not we responsible for the thousands of dead? For Iraq the independent estimate of civilians killed is 10.000 by now. Afghanistan is forgotten already. It all ends in a big bubble of doubts and rumors with, for instance ten different stories of what really happened to Jessica Lynch.

So, apart from "news my ars" -- what about us (in Britain or the US)? There is a link here to Brian Holme's text and the thread on Discordia that followed. I sure don't have an answer...anybody?
