In the midst of reading encouraging accounts of idealistic projects and conversations with friends about how many other women from our group feel the same need to "do something" that we have, a trivial little newspaper arrived in my household. Somewhere in the middle there was a small article about recently elected local politicians and their new responsibilities following local elections a few months ago.

Or artists or activists or programmers or any of the many other people producing words and ideas and important different perspectives? What happens to the important words and ideas and perspectives, when the people producing them are burdened or even overwhelmed with a sad child, aging parents, a dying friend, an altercation with the neighbors, a painfully disintegrating intimate relationship, physical ailments? Do priorities shift when vital household appliances break down?

In the recent makeworld paper#3 (distributed at n5m, available at makeworlds.org), another one of those.. texts (i guess it's basically manifesto-style) jointly written by Geert L. and Florian S. gets the last word.. Here are some (hopefully not too suggestive) questions (i really wanted to get this into the question corner and not the review-section - to try it out ;-):

The internet allows one to connect to a potentially infinite amount of content and people, all through the mediated view of a screen. This opens up tremendous potential for communication, inspiration and expression, yet at the same time due to the limitations of experience and lack of focus such a broad level of access to information doesn't it tend to speak to the lowest common impulse ?

I know some of you are interested in the growing bloggers research community. Just to announce that the Harvard Berkman Center is having a 'bloggercon' next weekend-- a conference on the bloggers impact on political journalism. Bloggers Conference Do you think I should head over and write a report?

Hey all,
I messed up in my last blog!
Here is the correct URL for for Bloggercon at Harvard University.
I also found out that this conference costs $500 for participants, which totally ruins my plan to pay a visit. Unless you may have a tip or two on how to sneak in conferences without paying the fee?

[- Kidult Konspiracy?

The New York Times News Service posted this story, which I can't seem to get out of my head for various reasons. There seem to be inconsistencies throughout the article as to what actually defines kidultism, but there are also some assumptions that bother me more deeply. While I have no particular interest in the Care Bears, Hello Kitty, or singing Itsy Bitsy Spider, I certainly do have some interests which might be considered more appropriate for a "younger demographic." Am I a kidult? Or is the very notion of kidultism, which is evidently considered "bad" - a way of pushing adults into doing more of things corporate society deems positive - like taking out mortgages and working all the time?
