Maybe this has been all over the lists already... since I'm not hip enough to read lists these days I don't know ;-) . So, forgive me if you've already seen the one about the people on the net who scammed a net scammer. Anyway, I was just thinking about how much fun net art/activism/culture can be when you just do it naturally, without awareness of all the Certified Art and Cultural Work being done in a similar vein ... if you think about it, there's some familiar looking tactics in there...

Let's think about hospitality. With the world wide web there is a platform created on which this old cultural practise and tradition of hospitality could take place in a new way. But how is hospitality applied and developed in the internet, a medium, in which equal exchange far away from hierarchical structures was seen as an idealistic goal? What happens with the special rules in hospitable relations and hospitable laws, f.e. concerning immigration within the practice of online hospitality? What role do you think play special types of hospitable partners, generous or selfish hosts, parasitical and scrounging guests?

Why is it when you do a google search using the phrase "iraq prisoners tortured by americans" in a web search you get 31,200 hits but when you do an image search employing the same phrase you get "Your search - iraq prisoners tortured by americans - did not match any documents", yet most of the web document hits have as a part of their respective web pages the images of Americans soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners. Things that make you go "Hummmmmmmm!"

As a Media Maker I find it disturbing that the Walt Disney corporation is practicing censorship (again) by ordering Miramax films to block the release of Michael Moore's new documentary on the Bush Adminstration and its response to 9/11.

Filtered through many years of involvement in organizations promoting more women in leading positions

This Sunday we have elections in Austria for the office of federal president. The two candidates are Heinz Fischer from the Social-Democratic party and Benita Ferrero-Waldner from the conservative Austrian People's Party (OeVP). Ferrero-Waldner is probably most familiar from photos of national representatives, where she is invariably found, as Minister of Foreign Affairs, batting her heavily mascaraed eyelashes at the camera, trying to smile coquettely without smearing her lipstick ... Isn't that a terrible thing for a feminist to write about another woman? Maybe it is the case that any claim can be made in an election campaign, but it infuriates me the way Ferrero-Waldner is trying to play the "we need more women in politics" card. Why would anyone vote for her, just because she is a woman? Do we really need more women in politics? Like this?
