I've often wondered: could Southern California (or anywhere in the US) ever
have a cool geek conference like the Chaos Computer
Club holds in Berlin? I don't mean I expect the CCC to hold conferences
in the US rather than their home of Germany. I mean: could US computer culture
- steeped in pragmatism and capitalist necessity - ever support a geek conference
focused on politics and/or recreational hackerdom? After all, San Diego's infamous
annual hacker conference, ToorCon - isn't a
Hacker conference at all, it's an "Information Security" conference. There's
a big difference.
So, with a mix of high hopes and skepticism, I paid a visit this past week
to the O'Reilly Emerging
Technology Conference in San Diego.

as our institute, the eipcp, is organizing a conference on public art policies and the function of critical art institutions (vienna, 26-28 feb 2004) - as we know them since decades at least in Europe -, i would like to use the opportunity here on discordia to discuss the main questions of this issue.

About this time last week, I was sitting with friends in the large auditorium at Transmediale in Berlin waiting for the keynote lecture by Antonio Negri. As we ended up waiting for quite some time, we got to see the interviews with Negri from the DVD by Angela Melitopoulos several times over (after we had already watched them in the afternoon at the exhibition). By the time everyone was seated in the audience and a complicated, large-scale headphone exchange had been successfully carried out, the large auditorium seemed to be steeped in the presence of this larger-than-life figure, who finally took his place at the table to speak to this crowd of people that had been waiting for him for hours.

The difference between what is called "real" and the so named "virtual" has many facets. Recently, when I became stuck into slow-going, time-absorbing work, with almost no contact to others, I came upon the rate of interests....

Surveillance and notions of privacy are rather common points of discussion on sites like Discordia, but I am personally interested in a very specific affect of contemporary consumer technology. While picturing Romeo and Juliet with Google searches and Caller ID, I wonder what it must be like to be young and obsessively in love today, in an era of gadgets and services that allow one to watch, to track and trace, to snoop on one's object of desire? How has this technology affected "typical" human behavior? How has it affected dating, love and the all-encompassing teen crush?

When an article about Judith Butler speaking in Israel ("To be or not to be Jewish, lesbian, feminist") was posted this afternoon to a mailing list, I immediately stopped what I was doing to read it. I was amused by the description of the enthusiasm of Butler's admirers, which sounded like a fairly accurate description of me. With all the references to her critics, though, what justification do I have for accepting her position?
