The computer game `Escape from Woomera', has caused a wee feeding frenzy over the past week, as Australia's immigration minister, Philip Ruddock, discovered the game's development funding has come from his own government's purse. The Australia Council for the Arts has thrown $25,000 at the development of a 3D adventure game, that invites gamers to assume the character of, and `live' through the experiences of a modern day refugee.

Information junkies: This is for you. You, as I have been indulging in up to the minute news coverage for too long. Lust to know what just happened - somewhere.

Even though I am new to weblogging I sense its power to generate a kind of intellectual freshness. I am an academic, writer, performer and based in the USA. I have been experimenting with writing styles and performative modes, sometimes in collaboration with my students, and notice that the web can generate unusually sharp ideas and conversations in very short amounts of time. It has been daunting for me to observe the clash between academic quality and other qualities of the mind.

I WANT TO HAVE YOUR BABY
calls for peace-minded people in multiple lands to "have babies" with "fathers" of their choosing. The "mother's labor" entails first deciding the father & then detailing the reasons behind her decision. Ideally, BABY de-rigidifies biology, gender, & temporal & spatial context; in this serious play mothers & fathers can be anybody anywhere. BABY holds a conceptual dirty diaper under the nose of The-Family-as-aggression-machine.

Until very recently, such things as home made crafts, amateur photography (and pornography), self-published newsletters, fan-zines, underground music and comics as well as non-professional collecting practices have had little impact beyond their immediate community of producers and admirers.

How does the cycle of work, success, depression, and back to work, continue to manifest itself in the US today? I recently finished a 16mm film, Perseverance & How to Develop It, which seeks to link issues of the growth of industry in the early 20th century, and how this relied on self-help books to instill a drive for success in young workers.

Today I received an e.mail that alarmed many of my friends. There it says that "four major credit bureaus in the US will be allowed, starting July 1, to release your credit info, mailing addresses, phone numbers, etc., to anyone who requests it." The author of the e.mail then asks us to call a number to voice our discontent. There are many more forms of productive discontent in relation to the invasion of privacy starting with the web initiative Boycottdelta.org that points to the fact that Delta Airlines introduces intrusive background checks including credit checks for everybody boarding their planes in certain airports.

[- Does anyone actually want to be a "cultural worker"?

Does anyone dream of becoming a cultural worker when they grow up? I have met future computer game programmers, future web designers, future special effects experts, even a future DVD menu designer, but I have yet to meet a kid who wants to be a cultural worker someday. Maybe they just don't know about that possibility yet? Or maybe I just know smart kids.
